Safety is a shared responsibility, and every team member plays an important role in upholding these standards—for themselves, their team, and our organization as a whole. Whether you are a team leader or participant, your awareness, preparation, and willingness to follow safety guidelines help create a safe and meaningful experience for everyone.

While our US and in-country staff have implemented strong measures to safeguard your experience, your awareness, preparation, and adherence to guidelines are essential.

Here’s what you and your team need to keep in mind to create a safe and secure trip environment.

Before You Travel: Preparations for Safety

  1. Liability Waiver: Make sure that every team member has thoroughly read and signed the 410 Bridge Liability Waiver before departing. This document is critical as it ensures that participants are informed of any potential risks and agree to the terms of travel.

  2. STEP Enrollment: Encourage your team to sign up for the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program provides critical updates, and in case of an emergency, it helps the embassy locate and assist you or evacuate the team if necessary.

  3. Health and Allergy Information: Each team member must inform 410 Bridge of any allergies, food sensitivities, or health issues that could affect their trip. Being outside familiar contexts can amplify health issues, so sharing these details allows our team to be better prepared for any specific needs.

During the Trip: Key Safety Reminders

  1. Avoid Night Travel: Our staff carefully plans itineraries to minimize unnecessary travel after dark whenever possible. In some locations, evening activities or short transfers may be part of the experience, such as traveling between a restaurant and hotel or within city areas. When travel after dark is necessary, our teams consider the safest routes, transportation options, and local guidance to reduce potential risks.

  2. Stay Together: Remind team members never to go anywhere alone. In public places like markets, participants should stay in groups, and no one should leave the hotel or guesthouse property unless explicitly approved by 410 Bridge staff.

  3. No Personal Contact Information Disclosure: Team members should not share any personal contact information with others, including our in-country staff, drivers, translators, or any community members. This includes exchanging emails and phone numbers or connecting via social media platforms such as “following” or “friending” anyone they meet on the trip. Maintaining these boundaries is essential to ensure both personal security and respect for professional relationships.

  4. Respect the Guidance of Your Community Vision Leader: Your in-country Community Vision Leader is responsible for your well-being and will make decisions with your safety as their top priority. Please respect their guidance and understand that any restrictions or boundaries are set to ensure your safety and security. Avoid pushing boundaries or requesting exceptions; they are there to help everyone have a safe and fulfilling experience.

  5. Follow the Itinerary: The itinerary is thoughtfully designed with safety, logistics, and the goals of the trip in mind. Participants should not make independent changes, add additional stops, or request activities outside of the planned schedule without first consulting 410 Bridge staff. Our teams may adjust the itinerary when needed based on local conditions, safety considerations, or community needs.

  6. Transport Safety: Ensure that no team member rides in ATVs, motorcycles, the back of an open-bed truck, or vehicles not arranged by 410 Bridge, nor should any team member operate a vehicle themselves. All transport is carefully selected and vetted by our organization to ensure the highest level of safety.

  7. Avoid Risky Activities: Activities such as rock climbing, spelunking, cave diving, horseback riding, and ziplining are not part of the 410 Bridge mission trip itinerary. Please do not add or participate in activities outside of the planned schedule without approval from 410 Bridge staff, as they may create safety concerns and could impact your travel insurance coverage.

The 410 Bridge Commitment to Safety

As an organization, we take several proactive measures to maintain a safe environment for all teams:

  1. Crisis Management and Training: We maintain an active Crisis Management Plan with defined roles and responsibilities and provide ongoing training to all 410 Bridge staff and contracted workers. This training ensures that all involved parties understand what to do if any safety situations arise during the trip.

  2. Monitoring Safety Alerts: We stay up to date with safety alerts from the U.S. Embassy in our partnering countries and work closely with in-country staff to adjust trip plans as needed to maintain safety.

  3. Health and Medical Insurance: International medical insurance is purchased for each team member, covering a wide range of potential health issues. Our in-country staff is trained to activate and use these policies if needed.

  4. Vet Trusted Partners and Locations: To ensure a secure environment, we carefully vet hotels, drivers, restaurants, vehicles, translators, and hospitals/local medical facilities to provide the safest options available.

  5. Flight Tracking and Logistics Adjustments: Our team tracks all inbound flights and notifies the in-country team of any flight delays, cancellations, or schedule changes. This communication allows local staff to adjust transportation and hotel arrangements as needed to minimize disruptions for arriving team members.

  6. Private Ground Transportation: Private, vetted ground transportation is provided for the entire duration of the trip to ensure secure, reliable travel between locations. These drivers know when it is necessary to deviate to a safer route of travel in case of an emergency or unexpected travel concern (such as a mudslide or demonstration blocking the road).

  7. In-Country Translator and Support: Each team is provided with a translator and/or an English-speaking Community Vision Leader who is available throughout your trip, including at the hotel in case any issues arise. This leader also stays connected with the team to assist as needed.

  8. 24/7 Emergency Contact Number: If our in-country staff cannot be reached in an emergency, team members can contact our dedicated emergency line at 770-694-0126, which connects directly to U.S.-based support for immediate assistance.

These protocols allow us to create a secure environment so that you and your team can focus on engaging with the community and the mission at hand.
