Recently, Mountain Lake went on a service trip to Haiti. The following is part 1 of 6 of their amazing story!
Haiti team update day 1:
We made it safe and sound to Haiti. It has been an amazing day with a lot to take in. Our travel began at 3:00am leaving Mountain Lake Church for the Atlanta airport. From there we flew through Miami and on to Port au Prince.
Customs and immigration was very quick and easy with people everywhere looking for their bags in the big warehouse-like building that served as baggage claim. We found everything and met our leaders Tara, Jude and Ronald then it was off to our bus.
Once everything was loaded on the bus, we left the airport and were greeted with an enormous amount of traffic. Our very capable driver got us through the mess of cars making three lanes out of one, then we headed for the mountains.
The mountain drive was paved for most of the way, but with the size of our bus and the dirt roads toward the end it took nearly six hours to get to the community of Bohoc (near Pignon on the map). Along the way we saw some amazing sites, the most beautiful being the largest lake in Haiti. We passed through several villages and small towns and the mountains were beautiful. The dirt roads wreaked havoc on the bus and our necks, but we managed to get through huge ruts and such with little trouble.
When we arrived in Bohoc, we met briefly with the community leaders to introduce ourselves and thank them for having us as their guests. We were running very late, but they waited for us until we arrived and greeted us with Cokes and crackers. After our short time together we continued to the Haiti Outreach Guest House in Pignon. It is a nice guest house with a wonderful dinner of chicken legs, rice with a tomato type of sauce, cheese potatoes, cooked cabbage and red kool-aid waiting for us. We checked our rooms out and unloaded the bus then had a somewhat quiet time at dinner with everyone being road weary.
After dinner, we talked about what we had seen throughout the day and headed off to bed anticipating our day with the community tomorrow.
