Meeting My Sponsored Child in El Pajal

This week, I had the incredible privilege of meeting my sponsored child, Emely Daiany Martínez Domingo, in the community of El Pajal, Guatemala—an experience that words can hardly capture. It was my first ever mission trip, and I came with an open heart, ready to serve, to learn, and to connect. But nothing could have prepared me for the joy, the tears, and the overwhelming sense of gratitude that came from this encounter.

Meeting Emely

I was so nervous and anxious to meet Emely. You could tell she was too—her face showed both surprise and shyness when she saw me for the first time. I, of course, started tearing up as I went to give her a hug, and the genuine smile she gave me warmed every bit of my soul.

I was blessed to be joined by Flor and Edwin from the 410 Bridge Guatemala office, who made this special meeting possible. I also had the opportunity to meet her principal and the head of the Leadership Council of El Pajal, both of whom play such vital roles in their community.

When I showed Emely the drawing, she had sent me about the “Fruits of the Spirit,” I could see the moment it clicked—she realized who I was! Her eyes lit up with joy, and her smile grew even bigger.

We spent time coloring together and reading the Bible. She loved my Bible and was fascinated by all the highlighted verses; she proudly told me that she had a Bible too and even shared some verses she knew by heart.

Meeting with the Leadership Council

Later, the head of the Leadership Council shared Emely’s story with me. Emely had lived in El Pajal before, but she and her father had gone to the United States seeking better opportunities for their family—her mother, two brothers, and sister.

During those two years, her father was severely injured on the job. Despite trying to get medical help, his condition worsened, and they had to return to Guatemala. Tragically, when they arrived home, they discovered that Emely’s mother had also become very sick. Both parents are now unable to work.

As I listened to this story, I could see tears welling up in Emely’s eyes.

We both cried together at the weight of it all. Yet, in that moment of sorrow, I also saw the beauty of community. The Leadership Council had stepped in to support her family, ensuring they were cared for. It was a powerful testament to the strength of El Pajal and the heart of the 410 Bridge mission—empowering local leaders to lift one another up.

Emely’s School

I was also able to see Emely’s schoolwork and her grades. Despite all the challenges she faces, it’s clear that she is working hard to turn things around. Her resilience and determination inspired me deeply. Together, we prayed for her and her family—for healing, for strength, and for faith that God’s love would carry them through.

Before I left, I got to meet her teacher and classmates. You could tell they adored her—they were so supportive and full of encouragement. It was a beautiful reminder that she is surrounded by people who love her.

Harder Than I Thought

Leaving El Pajal was harder than I imagined. As I waved goodbye, I realized that this wasn’t an ending—it was the beginning of a deeper connection. This trip showed me that love truly knows no borders, and that hope flourishes where community, faith, and compassion meet.

I came to serve, but I left changed forever.

Why Our New Kiu Case Study Matters

Seeing real, long-term transformation is the heart of why we do community development. It’s one thing to launch programs or build infrastructure, but it’s entirely another to watch a community continue to grow and thrive on its own after we step back.

That’s why we now have a new Kiu case study — to show what sustainable, community-led development looks like when it really works.
