The people of Kwambekenya have family in their roots. The land that now houses close to 10,000 people in and around it was once home to only a few: the Bekenya family. Yet when the government opted to displace the people living in the surrounding Aberdare Mountain range, the Bekenya family responded by opening their land, selling small plots to provide homes for the now homeless. Adding the prefix “Kwa,” meaning “belonging to” to their name, the village of Kwambekenya was born.

Our hopes for the community of Kwambekenya are not our own; we share in their vision for a better community. They are committed to fighting off what they call the “idleness” that leads to debauchery. By providing new outlets of growth and education, they are hoping to invite a new focus into the hearts of their people, one that will keep them from trouble and heartache. They are working to develop a leadership council with the 410 Bridge, which will be made up of a handful of strong, well-respected members of their community who can continue to cast and nurture the vision of change to the rest of the village. Wouldn’t it be great to provide them with pathways to success?
