Kwabekenya

Profile

The people of Kwambekenya have family in their roots. The land that now houses close to 10,000 people in and around it was once home to only a few: the Bekenya family. Yet when the government opted to displace the people living in the surrounding Aberdare Mountain range, the Bekenya family responded by opening their land, selling small plots to provide homes for the now homeless. Adding the prefix “Kwa,” meaning “belonging to” to their name, the village of Kwambekenya was born.

Kwambekenya is now home to a tight-knit community, naturally bordered on one side by a river and the Aberdare Mountains. While most communities in Kenya find themselves spread out among acres of land, the people of Kwambekenya are literally closed-in by these physical boundaries, and as a result, have developed a unique sense of camaraderie and fellowship with one another that is rare among other communities. The people of Kwambekenya possess a distinctive desire for revival within the borders of their community, wanting to ignite a new fire within the hearts of their friends and neighbors. It is exactly this sense of hope that excites us at the 410 Bridge about partnering with the people of Kwambekenya. As they look forward towards this revival, we look forward to coming alongside them in an effort to help see their hope fulfilled.
