Kiu

Profile

The community is located 2 ½ hours south of Nairobi in the Sultan Hamud area of Kenya. Access to the community is limited, as there is only a single road running from the community connecting it to the major road in the area. Comprised of eight churches and only one school, the village has recently been taken on by Compassion International as a child-sponsorship project. The current spiritual center of the community is the African Inland Church (AIC), a five-acre property founded some 30 years ago. The Kiu AIC works to use its resources to minister to the community by meeting their most immediate needs. Not only does their property include a center for weekly worship, but also a medical clinic that serves people from Kiu and neighboring villages.

The medical clinic has become a large aspect of the church’s ministry. On their busiest day, the clinic will serve up to 90 patients with diseases ranging from the basic ailments to the more complicated and most common case, Malaria. Yet with only four staff members, two beds, and limited access to medications, the clinic struggles to fully treat their patients. As the clinic is one of the only centers for medical help within miles of Kiu, it serves both patients from within Kiu as well as many sick and needy people migrating from surrounding villages. Many patients from outside of Kiu travel to the clinic suffering from HIV/AIDS, believing there will be treatments that can heal them. Yet since HIV/AIDS education and medication are scarce, the clinic can do little to help these patients. By partnering with the village of Kiu, The 410 Bridge hopes to provide a revived sense of life within the community and the hearts of the people.
