Kiria
Location:
2-3 hours north of Nairobi, near Kinangop and directly west of the Aberdare National Park .
Description:
Kiria (pronounced ki-REE-a) is an average sized community of about 2,500 people. With the Aberdare Mountains in the background and two rivers on either side of the community, the people of Kiria share life together in a very unique way. Most community members use the small plots of land they have to grow enough produce to sustain their families and to earn a meager income.
A handful of small, local churches in Kiria struggle to meet the spiritual needs of the community. In 2012 we expect to bring the Rejoice Project (originally piloted in the Ngaamba communities) to Kiria, Kwambekenya, and Karima.
Access to clean water, lack of quality education and spiritual apathy are some of the primary struggles for community members. In 2012 a project will be implemented to bring water from the Aberdare Mountains to large storage tanks within the community. The water accumulated in the storage tanks will help the community stabilize an otherwise unpredictable water source during the dry seasons
