Kawira
Location:
Kawira is located about 1½ hours north of Nairobi, outside Thika town.
Description:
Kawira means “hard work” in Kikuyu. The people are, in fact, hard working and focus on agriculture. Coffee is the main cash crop but is unpredictable and not a reliable source of income.
Kawira is one of the newest 410 Bridge communities.
In 2012 we hope to begin a water access and distribution project that will include a borehole and two distribution storage tanks strategically located in the community. Residents have already secured a hydrological survey (at their own expense) and the location of the proposed borehole has been determined.
Education will be the next priority. One primary school exists in the community with approximately 500 students. It is one of the poorest schools in the district with a lack of teachers, books, and supplies. Educational infrastructure is also badly needed.
