Hope
The leaders of Karogoto have a vision for their community to become a thriving, successful place where members of the village can be nurtured and grow into leaders. They hope to cast this vision into the hearts of the rest of their people, rallying them around a common goal for change. This transformation will not just be for the churches or the believers, but for the community as a whole. By assisting in equipping each person with the tools for change, you can begin to help develop opportunities for full and thriving lives for the people of Karogoto.
Projects
- Water Distribution – Distribution and filtration of water pumped from the river to access points within Karogoto.
- Knitting project – Top priority determined by the leadership council is the launching of small business for poor women. Women in the project will be trained to produce school uniform pullover sweaters for school uniforms. 10% of the proceeds will be used to fund community based needs such as orphan care and feeding programs for street children. The project started in 2008 with training on six knitting machines. It has grown in early 2009 to over fifty women in the project and additional knitting machines have been purchased and production is well underway. The first large order for sweaters was received in late 2008.
- Knitting project permanent structure – until a permanent building is constructed, the project will rent space. The permanent structure is needed which will cost around $15,000-20,000.
- Brick making microenterprise project for the men of the community.
Impact
Water is now available to the area since the completion of a pump and storage tank in town. Trips up and down to the river are a thing of the past.
50 women in the community are now trained and employed through the knitting project. These women are better equipped to provide for their families, which collectively account for over 250 people. 50 additional women will be added to the program 1st quarter 2009.
Visiting teams have had a great impact on the community, through out-reach events, Christmas programs and community projects.
