Kandaria
Location:
Kandaria is located in Nyanza Province in western Kenya about 45-minutes east of Kisumu. The community sits on the side of a mountain overlooking Lake Victoria.
Description:
With a population of around 4,000, Kandaria sits in the mountainous area overlooking Lake Victoria. The landscape is hilly and very rocky, but beautiful with many trees.
Since its adoption as a 410 Bridge community a vibrant Leadership Council has been established and a needs assessment conducted.
The first priority identified by the Leadership Council was spiritual development, and the local pastors have worked well together to serve the community. Pastors now come together in a non-denominational way and no longer see each other as “competitors.” Discussions are underway to specifically reach the men in the community to engage them in a relevant environment.
The top physical priority was water. A large distribution project was undertaken in 2009 and concluded in 2010. Today two large storage tanks exist; each filled from a public water source. Six smaller distribution tanks are fed from these two large tanks, with 14 distribution points located throughout Kandaria.
In 2011, construction of a medical clinic began and should become operational in early 2012.
The education programs currently underway in both primary schools are bearing amazing fruit. Akado Primary School has always been one of the top schools in the district; however Segoti Primary School was the second worst in the district as recently as two years ago. Since the implementation of the program, Segoti has improved dramatically. A feeding program has been initiated, teachers hired, and the infrastructure has steadily improved. Segoti and Akado are now two of the top three public schools in the district.
