Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others,
faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10

Endana

Location:

Approximately 4½ hours north of Nairobi and about one hour north of the equator near the town of Nanyuki.  Endana is adjacent to Ereri.

Description:

During the British Colonial times, several European families occupied the area around Endana. Several large ranches and game preserves in the area provided job opportunities for people from various local tribes that reside in the area.  Some ranches remain, but the local Kenyans have settled in a number of communities in the area.

The community of Endana, and the surrounding area are home to multiple tribes including the Samburu, Turkana, Masai, and Meru.  The area is very secluded and in numerous ways, cut off from the outside world. As a result, many of the tribal people here have not yet been reached with the Gospel. Teams serving in this area have an incredible opportunity to share the Gospel and administer God’s grace to the unreached.

The first priority that the Leadership Council identified and wanted to address was the water crisis that plagued the community.  A project to bring clean water to the community was completed in 2011, pulling water from the nearby Uaso Nyiro river and solar pumping it through a filtration system before distribution. The completed water project has been a huge blessing to the people of Endana and neighboring settlements.

The remote Endana primary and secondary schools were often neglected by the Ministry of Education. A quality improvement program was launched in 2009 and included a feeding program, hiring of qualified teachers and infrastructure improvements.  In 2011, Endana Primary School was the first public school to receive one textbook for each child in every subject.  Normally, 4-6 students share a single textbook.  Today, these schools serve as sources of hope for a brighter future for the entire community.

A major challenge to education was the presence of jiggers in the classrooms.  A jigger is a small flea-like insect that penetrates the children’s feet and eats away at the flesh.  Children can become completely incapacitated by the infestation and unable to walk to school.  In 2009, cement floors were installed in every classroom at Endana Primary and today there is not a single case of jiggers at the school.

Spiritual development remains a top priority. In 2011 the entire community and other neighboring communities were blessed by the donation of bibles by a U.S. church.
Several medical teams have visited the region over the past 3 years.
